Dear Tajudin, here is some of the available material in English about soum, more will come  
 
 
SOUM AS PUNISHMENT, 5 out of 6 TIMES?  
 
ACCORDING TO TRADITIONAL TRANSLATION FASTING USED AS PUNISHMENT:-  
 
ONE: FASTING/ROZAH for failing to help the Hajj congregation (2:196).  
TWO: FASTING/ROZAH for unintended murder (4:92).  
THREE: FASTING/ROZAH for vain utterances of oaths (5:89)  
FOUR: FASTING/ROZAH for hunting during Hajj (5:95)  
FIVE:FASTING/ROZAH for vain utterances about wives (58:2-4)  
 
Let's have a brief look at the five times  
 
In each instance, it is clear that if violations occur, the result will lead to expiations. If one is to exercise caution or be mindful in order to prevent such situations from occurring, why are penalty measures put in place? According to oxforddictionaries.com, the definition of “punishment” is given as follows:  
 
The infliction or imposition of a penalty as retribution for an offence: “crime demands just punishment” In other words, if one commits offenses / wrongful acts, he will receive a penalty accordingly.  
 
then observe Abstinence (from food, drink, and sex) for three days, as in Ramadhan. This is the expiation of your (breaking of) intentional oaths. (5:89)  
 
If one is to break an oath, then the direct consequence for this is to “observe abstinence” (no sex no food).Or for expiation, feed some poor at a cost equal to the cost of the animal. If someone has no means to do that, then Abstinence (for three days as in Ramadhan.)  
 
(Three days of Abstinence from food, drink, and sex, would equal feeding ten poor persons. 5:89). God has pardoned past violations. An appropriate court shall punish those who persist in violating this law. God is Almighty, Able to requite. (5:95)  
 
It is further classified in this verse, that an individual will be punished for the offense, however repeat offenses be dealt by the judiciary of the state.  
 
If a person is present at the Convention but cannot afford to contribute, he should exercise Abstinence for a total number of ten days, three days there and seven days after coming home. (2:196)  
 
Penalty terms have been provisioned – if one is unable to contribute, he should exercise abstinence (no sex no food)!  
 
It is not conceivable that a believer will slay another believer unless it be by mistake. If one kills a believer by mistake, there is the duty of freeing a believing person from bondage; may it be slavery, extreme poverty, crushing debt or oppression (please refer to the Ayat itself for more criterion) For those who find this settlement beyond their means, two consecutive months of Abstinence, as in the month of Ramadhan, are ordained by way of repentance from God. (4:92)  
 
This is a mind-blowing assertion; one who commits manslaughter is given an extreme light sentence of “Abstinence” (no sex no food) for two months. Nevertheless, a sentence would indicate an act of punishment due to an offense committed.  
 
The above verse is not stating, one must avoid killing / manslaughter, but providing details of capital punishment of “Saum” for two months.  
 
For arguments sake, let’s take “Saum” to be abstinence from sex and food. It is not common for prisoners / inmates to have intimate encounters, would this create self-discipline or enrage the inmate, causing psychological pressure upon the individual?  
 
The fact remains; the manner in which the above ayat is translated suggests that “Saum” is a punishment, contradicting the reason for prescribing soum, which is to make you muttaqi 2:183.2:187  
 
those of you who have made senseless declarations about their wives (58:3) let him observe daytime Abstinence (from food, drink and sex as in the month of Ramadhan) for two consecutive months before the couple may intimately touch each other. (58:4)  
 
Again, it is noted, that if you do wrongful acts, you will receive a penalty. Just to provoke thought amongst the readers – and going by just the translation, many men make terrible assertions about their wives, and vice versa, why is this commandment only for men? Does this mean those who do not have self discipline have the potential to commit murder, break oaths, and bad-mouth their spouses?  
 
The state determines disciplinary actions and ensures the offender is charged in a just manner receiving a deserved punishment. The state takes responsibility for the rehabilitation for the offender, not only imposing restrictions but providing a program of support to ensure repeat offences are not committed. An individual who commits such a crime, does so by choice, self-discipline (no sex no food) will not change that!  
 
Abstinence is better for you, if you only knew. (2:184¬)  
 
If “Saum” is such a blessing, why in the above Ayats is it portrayed as a punishment?  
 
(NOTE: Aastana is not stating that “Saum” is a punishment. We pointed out that the traditional interpretation of “Saum” is conveyed as a punishment! )  
 
We gave a definition of what we thinks “Saum” is that’s why we referred to “Maryams Saum” in in haqiqate soum. She did not “abstain” from sex and food, her “Saum” is the real “Saum” the same “Saum” which is prescribed for everyone.  
 
Saum is prescribed for you as it was prescribed for those before you (2:183)  
 
Let’s take a look at the following In this regard:  
 
**ONE: Self-discipline for failing to help the Hajj congregation (2:196).  
 
If one is unable to afford to contribute to hajj, is self discipline required? How much abstinence (no sex no food) should the victims of the flood in Pakistan / poor people in the world, how much abstinence (no sex no food) should they practice in order to develop self-discipline – obviously they are unable to contribute, so are they pardoned?  
 
**TWO: Self-discipline for unintended murder (4:92).  
 
Having lack of self-discipline, how likely is it to lead to murder? As stated above, being unable to contribute to hajj and murder require the same level of self-discipline /abstinence from food and sex...and water??  
 
Why is a poor person who is unable to contribute to hajj required to have Self discipline/ fast, this is also adopted for the murderer, instead of punishment or rehabilitation? The psychological state of a murderer cannot be the same as a poor person. Here the Quran is definitely conveying a deeper message.  
 
**THREE: Self-discipline for vain utterances of oaths (5:89)  
 
Again, the same self-discipline is required for vain utterance of oaths? Can vain utterance of oath be placed in the same category as murder?  
 
**FOUR: Self-discipline/fasting for hunting during Hajj (5:95)  
 
A very different type of act, but the same notion of “Saum” (no sex no food) which should lead to self-discipline? How can refraining from having sex or food change the psychological state of the offenders / law violators?  
 
If the inmates of prisons in the UK and the US were to perform “Saum” (no sex no food) for 30 days, would they gain self-discipline?  
 
**FIVE: Self-discipline/fasting for vain utterances about wives (58:2-4)  
 
I don’t think any wife would have sex with her husband if he bad-mouthed her anyway, neither would she cook for him, either way, he would be in a constant state of abstinence (no sex no food).  
 
One must be in a certain psychological state of mind to commit such acts, which are on different levels; you claim all this can be treated by refraining from sex and food?  
The west who have the highest standard of rehabilitation programs missed out the greatest method given by the Quran, no sex no food? And this of course would result in no murders, no vain utterance about wives, no vain utterance of oaths, and everyone would be able to afford to contribute to hajj….?  
 
All of the above offenses were committed because of lack of self-discipline? In these cases “Saum” is not self-discipline/ fasting (no sex no food), but a rehabilitation program which is required to treat the psychological state of mind of the law breakers, their intention which initiates the action must stop immediately.  
 
For example, if an individual wanted to loose weight, one would hire a personal trainer. The personal trainer would advise you to stop certain types of foods immediately. Whether dietary or physical exercise, one would then start the program given by him / her.  
 
However, the personal trainer would not give the same training program to a body builder, nor would it be the same for a gymnast.  
 
*Those who are sick (such as those who suffer from diabetes) how would they attain self-discipline (no sex no food), if they commit such crimes and cannot conform to abstinence (no sex no food) ?  
 
I don’t understand how no sex and no food can lead to taqwa? Yes we are talking about the noblest book, so illogical conclusions adopted about “Saum” which are clearly inferior to much better programs created by the west, such conclusions need to be eliminated!

SOUM VERSE 2:183  
 
 
Sam Alfaras = Horse stopped feeding (when used for horse)  
Sam Alma = Water stopped flowing (when used for water)  
Sam Alrih = Wind stopped blowing (when used for air) and  
Sam AnAlta’am = Man stopped eating (when used for food)  
 
Like the word Nation (Qawm), the paradigm of soum is action (Fael) with the root letters saad, waaw, and meem (م و ص), as mentioned above. Other words derived from this root are Sam, Yasoum, Souma, and Siama and they means to stop whatever someone is doing.  
 
The Arabic dictionary Al Qamos at page 953 is defining Al soum as to stop the conversation/ speech or to stop your act/action  
 
IN THE QURAN AL SOUM IS USED THE SENSE :- TO STOP EVIL, REFRAIN FROM EVIL DEEDS  
TO AVOID ALL KIND OF EVIL DEEDS ARE CALLED AL SIAM (PLURAL FOR SOUM)  
 
Oh Momins (those who live in Amn)! Siyaam, I.E to stop/ avoid doing evil deeds and do good work, is prescribed for you just like it was prescribed for those before you, so you get consistent with the divine commandments (Translationof Aastana)

يَا أَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا كُتِبَ عَلَيْكُمُ الصِّيَامُ كَمَا كُتِبَ عَلَى الَّذِينَ مِن قَبْلِكُمْ لَعَلَّكُمْ تَتَّقُونَ  
 
مومنو! تم پر الصیام یعنی برائی سے رکنا اوربھلائی کے کام کرنا اسی طرح فرض کیا گیا ہے جیسا کہ تم سے پہلے لوگوں پر فرض کیا گیا تھا تاکہ تم احکام الٰہی سے ہم آہنگ ہو جاؤ۔  
 
مباحث:۔  
اس آیت میں ایک اور حکم فرضیت کے درجے میں وارد ہو رہا ہے۔  
الصوم مادہ ص و م معنی : رکنا ،تھمنا، صام الفرس گھوڑا چارہ کھانے سے رک گیا، یا گھوڑا چلنے سے رک گیا، صام الماء پانی رک گیا، صام الریح ہوا چلنے سے رک  
 
گئی، صام عن الطعام کھانے سے رک جانا۔ کسی بھی قول یا فعل سے رکنا ( قاموس الوحید صفحہ نمبر۹۳۵)۔  
 
 
قرآن نے صوم کو برائی سے رکنے کے معنی میں استعمال کیا ہے۔  
 
صام، یصوم، صوم، و صیاماً = صوم اور صیاماً دونوں مصدر ہیں اور ایک ہی معنی رکھتے ہیں۔ صوم کی جمع اصوام ہے جیسے قوم کی جمع اقوام ہے۔  
 
قرآن کی اصطلاح میں ہر برائی سے بچنا الصوم ہے۔  
 
اس آیت میں الصوم کا مقصد بیان کیا گیا ہے اور وہ ہے تاکہ تم متقی بنو۔  
متقی کون ہوتا ہے؟ آپ نے آیت نمبر ۱۷۷ میں ملاحظہ فرما لیا۔مسلمانوں کے مروٓجہ روزہ نے نہ تو پہلے کبھی کسی کو متقی بنایا ہے اور نہ ہی بنا سکتا ہے۔ یہ ہمارا مشاہدہ ہے کہ روزوں کے مہینے میں روزہ دار بھوک پیاس سے انتہائی بدمزاج اور چڑ چڑا ہو جاتا ہے۔ تمام اشیائے خوردونوش نہ صرف مہنگی ہو جاتی ہیں بلکہ بازار سے غائب ہو جاتی ہیں۔ افطاری کا وقت جیسے جیسے قریب آتا جاتا ہے، روزہ دار کی حالت بد سے بدتر ہوتی جاتی ہے۔ دفتروں سے کام کرنے والے غائب رہتے ہیں۔ اس بھوک پیاس کے روزے سے متقی نہیں بنا جا سکتا۔  
 
یاد رکھیے صوم کے ذریعے انسان متقی بنتا ہے جس کی کیفیات سورۃ البقرۃ کی آیت نمبر ۱۷۷ کے مطابق حسب ذیل ہوتی ہیں۔  
۱۔۔ دوسروں کو امن مہیا کرتا ہے۔  
۲۔۔ اپنے مال کو دوسروں کیلئے کھلا رکھتا ہے۔  
۳۔۔ ایک عدل اجتماعی کے قیام کی کوشش کرتا ہے۔  
۴۔۔ اصلاحی نظام قائم کرتا ہے۔  
۵۔۔ انسانیت کے لئے خوشحالی کا باعث بنتا ہے۔  
۶۔۔ جب بھی وعدہ کرتا ہے تو پورا کرتا ہے۔  
۷۔۔ ہر مشکل وقت میں ثابت قدم رہتا ہے۔

أَيَّامًا مَّعْدُودَاتٍ ۚ فَمَن كَانَ مِنكُم مَّرِيضًا أَوْ عَلَىٰ سَفَرٍ فَعِدَّةٌ مِّنْ أَيَّامٍ أُخَرَ ۚ وَعَلَى الَّذِينَ يُطِيقُونَهُ فِدْيَةٌ طَعَامُ مِسْكِينٍ ۖ فَمَن تَطَوَّعَ خَيْرًا فَهُوَ خَيْرٌ لَّهُ ۚ وَأَن تَصُومُوا خَيْرٌ لَّكُمْ ۖ إِن كُنتُمْ تَعْلَمُونَ  
اصلاح معا شرہ کی تربیت کے ایام ہیں تو جو شخص تم میں سے بیمار ہو یا سفر پر ہو تو دوسرے دورانیے میں تربیت حاصل کرے اور جو لوگ اس تربیت کے اہل ہیں وہ مسکین کی ضروریات زندگی حاصل کرنے کی رکاوٹوں کو دور کر یں اور جو کوئی احکام الٰہی کی اطاعت کرے تو اس کے لیے ہی بہتر ہے، اور اگر تم کو علم ہو کہ تمہارا تربیت کرنا خود تمہارے حق میں ہی بہتر ہے۔  
 
مباحث:۔  
ایاماً معدودات : یہ مرکب نصبی حالت میں ہے جس کا مطلب ہے کہ ایام سے پہلے کوئی فعل موجود ہے۔ اس آیت میں ایاماً معدودات کا مرکب آیا ہے جس کےمعنی گنتی کے  
 
چند دن کیے جاتے ہیں۔ اول تو اس کو چند دن سمجھ کر روزوں پر چسپاں نہیں کیا جا سکتا اس لیے کہ چند دن کا مطلب ہوگا دو چار دن، نہ کہ پورا مہینہ۔  
 
دوسری بات یہ کہ قرآن کی اصطلاح ہے جس کا ترجمہ نہیں کیا جا سکتا۔ آئیے قرآن میں وہ تمام مقامات جو ایام کے حوالے سے آئے ہیں، دیکھتے ہیں۔  
 
ایام اللہ : ۱۴:۵ ۴۵:۱۴  
 
ایام معدودہ : ۲:۸۰  
ایاما معدودات : ۲:۲۰۳، ۲:۱۸۴، ۳:۲۴  
 
ان ایام کے علاوہ بھی ایام الخالیہ، ایام معلومات اور ایام نحسات کا ذکر ہے۔ ان ایام کے متعلق مناسب موقع پر بات کی جائیگی، اورہو سکتا ہے ہمارے پڑھنے والےقرآن کے اتنے مزاج شناس اور مزاج آشنا ہو جائیں کہ اتنی وضاحت کی ضرورت ہی نہ رہے۔  
 
عجیب بات ہے کہ بھوک پیاس کا روزہ رکھنے والوں کو یہ تک نہیں معلوم کہ ابن عباس ان ایام سے مراد ہر ماہ کے تین دن لیتے تھے،لیکن بعد کے آنے والوں نے ان  
 
کی جگہ ایک ماہ کے روزے فرض کر دیئے۔ خدا ہی جانے وہ کیوں کبھی کوئی حکم نازل کرتا ہے اور کبھی کوئی ۔۔۔۔۔۔۔؟  
 
وَلَقَدْ أَرْسَلْنَا مُوسَى بِآيَاتِنَا أَنْ أَخْرِجْ قَوْمَكَ مِنَ الظُّلُمَاتِ إِلَى النُّورِ وَذَكِّرْهُمْ بِأَيَّامِ اللَّهِ إِنَّ فِي ذَلِكَ لآيَاتٍ لِكُلِّ صَبَّارٍ شَكُور سورۃ ابراہیم آیت ٍ نمبر ۵  
 
اس آیت میں موسیٰ کے متعلق بتایا جا رہا ہے کہ ہم نے موسیٰ کواپنی آیات کے ساتھ اس لیے بھیجا تھا کہ وہ اپنی قوم کو جبر و استبداد کے پنجوں سےآزاد کرائے اور ان کو اللہ کے ایام یعنی اُس دور کی یاد دہانی کرائے جس میں آزادی و خوشحالی اور ترقی و کشاد ہوتی ہے۔ اس میں ان لوگوں کے لیے دلائل ہیں جوثابت قدم رہنے والے ہوتے ہیں اور نعمت کا صحیح استعمال کرتے ہیں۔  
 
لیکن یہی ایام اللہ اگر ایک طرف مومنین کی آزادی کا باعث ہیں تو دوسری طرف استحصالی طبقے کے لیے مصیبت کا باعث ہوتے ہیں یعنی ایک ہی دور میں صالح لوگوں کو جزا ملتی ہے اور استحصالی طبقے کو سزا۔  
 
قرآن کی تاریخ گواہ ہے کہ جب سیدنا موسیٰ کامیاب ہوئے تو آل موسیٰ کو آزادی ملی، جو ان کے لیے ایام اللہ تھے لیکن آل فرعون کو ناکامی کا منہ دیکھنا پڑا اور ان کے لیے ایام المعدودات اور النحسات تھے، جس کیلئے نام نہاد یہود یہی کہتے رہے کہ اگر ہماری پکڑ ہوئی بھی تو ایام المعدودات یعنی ایام النحسات کے دوران ہی ہو گی۔  
المعدودات : مادہ ع د د معنی : عدد کے لحاظ سے گنتی اور استعداد کے لحاظ سے تیاری۔  
 
اس آیت میں بھی کہا گیا أَيَّامًا مَعْدُودَاتٍ فَمَنْ كَانَ مِنْكُمْ مَرِيضًا أَوْ عَلَى سَفَرٍ فَعِدَّةٌ مِنْ أَيَّامٍ أُخَرَ  
 
اگر سزا کے معنی میں لیا جائے تو اس کا مفہوم ہو گا کہ جس شخص پر یہ تربیت لاگو کی جا رہی ہے اس کو ان ایام میں تربیت لینی ہو گی جن کا تعین مملکت کے قوانین کرتے ہیں... اور اگر استعداد کے معنی میں لیا جائے تو بھی مفہوم وہی ہوگا کہ ان ایام میں اصلاح معاشرہ کی تربیت لینی ہو گی۔  
 
مریض : مادہ م ر ض معنی: کمی، کمزوری خواہ جسمانی ہو یا ذہنی۔ مرض فی الا مر کام میں کوتاہی کرنا، مرض فی کلامہ کمزور بات کرنا۔  
 
سفر : مادہ س ف ر روشن ہونا، نمایاں اور واضح ہونا، ایک مقام سے دوسرے مقام پر منتقل ہونا، ( خواہ زمینی ہو یا علمی ) سفر الشئی کھولنا منکشف کرنا، سفر الورق والکتاب لکھنا۔  
وَعَلَى الَّذِينَ يُطِيقُونَهُ فِدْيَةٌ طَعَامُ مِسْكِينٍ  
اس آیت کا سادہ لغوی ترجمہ پیش کرتے ہیں، ملاحظہ فرمائیے۔ سادہ سا ترجمہ ہے۔  
 
اور جو لوگ ا س تربیت کے اہل ہیں وہ مسکین کے ضروریات زندگی حاصل کرنے کی رکاوٹوں کو دور کر یں۔  
 
لیکن اس آیت کے ترجمے میں ہر مترجم نے اپنی اپنی استطاعت کے مطابق خوب گھپلا کیا ہے۔ کسی نے اس آیت کے ترجمے میں یہ خیال کرکے کہ اللہ یطیقونہ سے پہلے لا بتانا بھول گیا تھا اس لیے علماء نے لا کو محذوف مان کر ترجمہ کیا ہے جو تحریف فی القرآن ہے، جو کچھ یوں ہے (۔۔۔۔اور جو لوگ روزہ رکھنے کی طاقت رکھیں لیکن روزہ نہ رکھیں وہ روزے کے بدلے محتاج کو کھانا کھلائیں۔)  
 
کچھ کو یہ بات پسند نہ آئی اس لیے انہوں نے کہا کہ "چونکہ طاقت کا مادہ ط و ق ہے اس لیے اس کا ترجمہ ہوگا جو بمشکل اس کی طاقت رکھیں تو وہ فدیہ میں ایک محتاج کو کھانا کھلائیں۔"  
فدیہ : مادہ ف د ی ، معنی بدلہ، روش، چال۔ اسی مادہ سے فدائین (ملک پر جان قربان کرنے والے) ہے۔  
تطوع : مادہ ط و ع معنی فرمانبرداری، اطاعت۔  
وَأَن تَصُومُوا خَيْرٌ لَّكُمْ ۔۔آیت کے اس جزو کا ترجمہ بھی غلط کیا جاتا ہے۔ یہ مترجمین اس کا ترجمہ کرتے ہیں ’’اور اگر تم روزہ رکھو تو تمہارے لیے بہتر ہے‘‘..... یعنی ایک رعایت کا پہلو بھی نکال لیا کہ روزہ نہ رکھنے پر کوئی بات نہیں، بس فدیہ دے کر فارغ ہو سکتے ہو، لیکن اگر روزہ رکھ لو تو تمہارے لیے اچھا ہے ورنہ پابندی نہیں۔ اب خود غور کیجئے کہ اس طرح تو صاحب ثروت لوگ جب فدیہ دے کر آرام سے چھوٹ سکتے ہیں تو پھر وہ کیوں روزہ رکھیں گے؟  
آئیے آپ کو رشید نعمانی کی کتاب سے حوالہ دیتے ہیں، صفحہ نمبر ۲۵۸ جلد اول پر اَن کی بحث کے تحت لکھتے ہیں۔  
" ان معنی: کہ، یہ کہ۔ اس کی چار صورتیں ہیں پہلی صورت ۔ ان مصدریہ۔ ماضی اور مضارع دونوں پر داخل ہوتا ہے اور اس کا مابعدبمنزلہ مصدر ہوتا ہے، ایسی صورت

دیکھ لیجئے اس ترجمے کی وجہ سے وہ متبادل صورت ہی پیدا نہیں ہوتی، بلکہ ترجمہ ہوگا ... "اور تمہارا صوم کرنا خود تمہارے لیے بہتر ہے۔"  
ایک اہم بات :۔۔۔۔۔۔۔۔اوپر کے عمومی ترجمے میں صوم کا ترجمہ ’’روزہ‘‘ مترجم کونقل کرتے ہوئے لکھا گیا ہے۔ ہم صوم کو معاشرے کے لیے ایک اصلاحی تربیت سمجھتے ہیں۔
