What is the concept of "WEALTH" in Islam?

(2:02 ... This is a Book whereof there is absolutely no doubt concerning its authority and authenticity. And it leaves no doubts lingering in a Seeking mind. It is a Guide for مُتَّقِينَ

One of the qualities of مُتَّقِينَ is;
(2:03 … who open up their spending for others, from the resources granted to them.
(يُنفِقُونَ means: open up for spending on others)

How much one should spend on others?
The question has been answered as;
(2:219 … they may open up for spending, that can be given easily, keeping in mind the security / safety for future.
ٱلْعَفْوَ (وَ - فْ – ع means: that can be given easily and without constraint, A redundant portion being such as is left of property, remaining over and above what is expended, soundness, security and safety. (Lexicon by Edward William Lane)

How should they spend?
Answer is;
Recover/accept from their wealth صَدَقَةً, which will purify their characters and evolve them to a higher degree

Wealth should not be extracted by force, rather through proper legislation.
(2:256 … there is absolutely no compulsion or coercion in ٱلدِّينِ

Whereas those who spend, will do it for the sake of Allah;
(2:272 ... Whatever good you give benefits your own ´self´ when you spend for the sake of Allah. Whatever good you give will be repaid to you, without the least injustice.

Previously I have used the term “tax” for صَدَقَةً which seems incorrect due to the element of force involved in taxation.
Definition of “Tax”;
To tax (from the Latin taxo; "I estimate") is to impose a financial charge or other levy upon a taxpayer (an individual or legal entity) by a state or the functional equivalent of a state such that failure to pay is punishable by law.
A tax may be defined as a "pecuniary burden laid upon individuals or property owners to support the government … a payment exacted by legislative authority. "Tax "is not a voluntary payment or donation, but an enforced contribution, exacted pursuant to legislative authority" and is "any contribution imposed by government … whether under the name of toll, tribute, tillage, gable, impost, duty, custom, excise, subsidy, aid, supply, or other name.
(This shows صَدَقَةً cannot be a Tax, rather it is a spending in the way of Allah as defined in (2:272), however the word خُذْ in (9:103) denotes a verb which is imperative (فعل امر) and this means صَدَقَةً is mandatory and continuous process of collection and distribution)
Concept of wealth generation in Islam;
Wealth is generated by investing labor (primary means of wealth generation).
(53:39 ... every human being shall be responsible for his works, and compensated for, his labor.
(53:40 ... His effort will be seen, and not results

Every human being has been granted different potential to invest labor, earn and spend.
(5:48 ... But He decided to let you test yourselves by what (potentials) He has granted you. So, outdo one another in ٱلْخَيْرَٰتِ

A class difference will always be there, based on natural inclinations as well as diversity of tendencies, aptitudes and tastes or preferences of people.
(6:165 ... He determines your ranks, some above others (according to His laws). He tries you in what He has given you...
(46:19 … And for all there will be ranks according to what they did, so that all will be rewarded as per their tasks/duties; and merit will not be violated.

We need to understand that wealth is not banned in Islam;
However, wastage is prohibited.

Everyone has a right to become rich by sheer hard work. If someone is not working and still enjoying the standard of living equivalent to a hardworking individual, it cannot be regarded as justice or equality. There is no restriction as such on becoming rich if you are working harder than others. Just one condition though, which says, the more an individual earns, more he/she is required to contribute in “welfare” by offering the surplus to central authority (9:103).
On the other hand, central authority must take care that wealth should not circulate exclusively among the rich people creating a situation of haves and have not’s.
(59:07 … So that it may not keep revolving between the wealthy among you.

What is welfare?
(2:43 (A concept of welfare state).
In order to comprehend the term “welfare state” we need to look at the following verses;
(41:10 … bounties of earth to be equally shared by all …
(70:24 … And they are those in whose wealth and possession there is a known right for the needy and the deprived.

It is the responsibility of central authority to collect and distribute wealth among needy and deprived (9:103) and to create a system which guarantees to provide free of charge, food and comforts of life, equally to everybody.

Welfare should always be at minimum level, providing the basic necessities of life for everyone. Anyone desirous of better standard of living must go out and work hard (He/She has all the rights to earn it). Lucrative welfare grants by government can always spoil people in a way that majority of population would prefer living on welfare money rather than going out to work.

(In the end, I would like to thank brother aurangzaib for sharing his thoughts earlier on and helping me to understand the concept of wealth and economy which is the most important aspect of Quran)

So, Islam also endorses capitalism ???

Comments by: Junaid On 18 February 2011Report Abuse
Brother momin;

Capitalism is a man made system which emerged in 12th and 13th century (almost 6 centuries after Quran was revealed). How can Quran endorse something which was invented centuries later?

Capitalism is an economic system in which the means of production are privately owned and operated for a private profit; decisions regarding supply, demand, price, distribution, and investments are made by private actors in the free market; profit is sent to owners who invest in businesses, and wages are paid to workers employed by businesses and companies. (A text book definition of Capitalism)

On the other hand, Quran states Human labor as primary means of wealth generation;

I would request you to please compare the definition of capitalism with what Quran says and tell me what is common between these two?

Dear brother Junaid,

You are talking about time, agreed. But brother Moazzam says it is beyond time and space????
Dear AlAhmer , can you throw some light.

Comments by: moazzam On 18 February 2011
Dear Momin / junaid !. This is the beauty of Alkitab,that ,it never gives a designed pattern of any socio economic system specific to time and space, rather it provides the values beyond time and space. One of the value is, to protect the rights of each and every member of the society, where any socio economic system is being implemented in any ERA( la tuzlamoona wala tuzlamoon).Remember the society is free to legislate and execute any socio economic system which meat the said Quranic criteria.THIS IS THE FIELD OF ECONOMISTS.

**(Dear Momin / junaid !. This is the beauty of Alkitab,that ,it never gives a designed pattern of any socio economic system specific to time and space, rather it provides the values beyond time and space.( by moazzam)

Brother moazzam, what you said seems very logical and it makes a lot of sense to me. There is no pattern available in Quran and it all depends on how we implicate. (A brilliant concept I would say)
I also agree with your statement that "rights of every individual should be protected" and this is the primary aspect to be considered while designing a pattern of Islamic socio economic system.

Brother momin, we have already seen the flaws of Capitalism. I am sure the values taken from Quran gives us a much different and a much better concept of economy as compared to capitalistic economic system.
I am not rejecting capitalism, rather I do believe that we can always include good features of capitalism (such as freedom of choice, diversity in production and free market economy) in Islamic economic system.

I would request all the respected members to participate in this discussion. Lets try and create a rough sketch of an ideal and practically applicable Islamic socio-economic system.
