Homo economicus, or Economic human, is the concept in some economic theories of humans as rational and narrowly self-interested actors who have the ability to make judgments toward their subjectively defined ends. This theory stands in contrast to the concept of Homo reciprocans, which states that human beings are primarily motivated by the desire to be cooperative, and improve their environment.

Which concept does Quran supports?
A: Homo reciprocans
B: Homo economicus
C: A mixture of the two
D: None of the above mentioned concepts, rather provides an Idea which is totally different?

After going through the details I have shared above, please provide theories stipulated with Quranic references to support your inference.

Why I am asking this question?

I was thinking about the fact that why there are no details given in Quran regarding different crimes and appropriate punishments, why no details are there regarding the methods of public dealing, why no details are given about how to manage our everyday life affairs, our daily activities etc. Rather the instructions have been given on a very broader perspective, defining a set of Do's and Don'ts.

What I understood after a lot of brainstorming is this;

Quran is basically a message and a set of instructions for homo sapiens who have gone through the process evolution and gained the status of Adam or mankind. We are expected to have the basic abilities to distinguish between good and bad as well as a basic understanding in terms of social responsibilities. It means that having the basic abilities to think, reflect and decide, are the pre-requisits of understanding and implementing Quranic Ideology.

People must use the experience they have gained through their observations, research and what they learned through trial and error methods, which itself is a heritage, considering a continuous process of learning generations after generations. I am not talking about brinwashed people who cannot see beyond the man made system of subservience defined by the self proclaimed ruling elites. Rather I am talking about those who can think, understand and reflect, despite being in a very odd situation these days.

Various scholars, thinkers and truth seekers have done a lot of research on behaviour, ethics and socio-economic responsibilities. These indivisuals have already produced various alternate designs which are quite different from the one that is being followed blindly by the masses. It is imperative that we understand the difference between Homo reciprocans and Homo economicus, otherwise we may never be able to comprehend the true spirit of
AL-FURQAN.

Let me try and give you some examples.

Today, we cannot even think about surviving in the world without having the fiat money, the paper currency in our possession.

Do you think the creator has defined this rule?
Of course not!

Today, we cannot have food, shelter, healthcare or education unless we pay for it in form of paper money which is considered as legal tender.

Do you think the creator has defined this rule?
Of course not!

Today, we cannot even imagine to have access to various natural resources, since the entities known as governments or corporations claim to own them.

Do you think, the creator has defined this system?
Obviously not!

Now please think for a while, what rules are we following and why?

The creator has defined natural laws which are unchangeable and are required to be followed. There are known and unknown consequences we can face in case we do not follow those natural laws. But on the contrary, we have bound ourselves to manmade laws, which are primarily based on the elements of greed and selfishness and as a result, we have lost our abilities to think beyond a certain limit. The nature has provided us everything in abundance but we are creating scarcity and this is nothing but the consequences of not abiding by the natural laws.

Here I can give you a very good example of Gold or Silver. I hope you do know that the value of metals depend on the amount of efforts needed in terms of mining and processing. We consider Gold as a more valuable metal when compared to Silver but in reality, there are several reasons why Silver should have more value as compared to Gold. First one is that the total volume of Silver above ground is much less than the volume of Gold. Secondly there is a huge industrial usage of Silver which means there is a continuous demand for this metal. By all formulas, equations and rules, Silver deserves to be more valuable but we cannot even think about it, because the elites are controling the prices.

Do you think the creator has assigned this value to these metals which definitely are the natural resources?
Of course not!

Whose rules are we following here then?

As a matter of fact, our actual wealth is not the money or precious metals, rather it's the abilities, the potential we have and whatever we have learned using our brain. Anything we produce combining our abilities, our potential, the knowledge we posses with the physical labor we apply is our actual output. In case of a community or a state,
this particular output collectively forms the real wealth. We can also consider this out put as GDP (in the language of economics) i.e. the total out put in terms of goods and services in a given time frame.

What exactly is the driving force behind our economic system?
What exactly is the driving force behind all the technology being introduced, all the scientific advancement, all the goods being produced and services being provided?
Are we getting everything because of the fiat money?
Are we getting all this because of the Gold, Silver and other precious metals we have?

The answer is No!
It's neither money nor the wealth, rather the whole system is running because of the human efforts, which is the combination of human abilities and the labor applied. Yes it is the labor being invested by mankind which is producing the output we see around us today. Albeit is is very unfortunate that the motivation force behind all this scientific and technological advancement, all this production of goods and services is money.

Men are working because they are getting money to work. A man-made system, which has been created out of greed and selfishness and if has turned mankind into Homo economicus i.e. rational and narrowly self-interested actors who have the ability to make judgments toward their subjectively defined ends. On the other hand, Quran expects us to become Homo-reciprocans and not Homo-economicus. The message emphasizes on humans to become cooperative actors who are motivated by improving their environment. (Please correct me if I am wrong).

Brother Junaid

I have no words to express my feelings. It was simply amazing. The best part was
***As a matter of fact, our actual wealth is not the money or precious metals, rather it's the abilities, the potential we have and whatever we have learned using our brain. But to tell you the truth, there are different types of people in this world. One who live for money, and one who live for their abilities. In both cases, abilities/ labour is the real input/ wealth of this world. But the output, be it in any form is not shared equally.

In my opinion, Home reciprocans is better than Home economicus, but can't say if it is according to Quran. I struggle to find the motivation of the economic system from Quran yet, although the objective is to gather on one platform and live in peace.

Salaam;

Brother Waseem, I am glad that you like what I said and I am even more glad to read the following ending comments from you;

In my opinion, Homo-reciprocans is better than Home economicus, but can't say if it is according to Quran. I struggle to find the motivation of the economic system from Quran yet, although the objective is to gather on one platform and live in peace.

Dear brother, Just like you, I am also struggling to find the motivation of economic system from Quran and probably that is the reason why I am asking questions related to this particular topic, every now and then. As you said that "the objective is to gather on one platform and live in peace", I would request you to please think about the main reasons behind why the objectives have not been achieved yet? What are the basic factors behind all this division, all the wars, all the corruption and all this tyranny, suppression and oppression?

As per my understanding, the objective of peace and unity has not been achieved, only because of the greed and selfishness which is a part of human nature or I would say human psyche. It is this greed and selfishness which has divided mankind into groups having their own interests and their own agendas. Most of these agendas are not visible to us and they are being carried out by few groups through generations and the plans or the line of action goes back deep in the history.

What I have learned using my very limited abilities and meager knowledge is that Quran emphasizes on open access to natural resources for all alike. If I am right here, then the concept of economic becomes very important in this regard.

Let me share with you a very interesting definition of this term "Economics" which you may not find in the mainstream curriculum or text book education.

The term economics comes from the Ancient Greek οἰκονομία (oikonomia, "management of a household, administration") from οἶκος (oikos, "house") + νόμος (nomos, "custom" or "law"), hence "rules of the house(hold)".

You see? Economics is about managing your household affairs and this term 'house hold" encompasses not only you and your family but also the society or even the entire world you are living in.

Coming back to the objectives of Quran, I think the household management cannot be considered as successful until the members of household are in a state of peace and harmony. The reason why mankind failed to get it's household straight is because everyone desires to become the most powerful member of this household. This desire for power has turned all the members into Homo-ecomomicus i.e. rational and narrowly self-interested actors who have the ability to make judgments toward their subjectively defined ends.

Today, in this world or 21st century, the Pharaohs are controlling the world, not by declaring themselves as Gods, not by using armies to conquer physical lands, not with the help of their magicians or clerics, but they are doing it though economics. The Queen, the Vaticans, the Roman Catholics, House of Rothschild, the Rockefeller, Cecil Rhodes, J. P. Morgan, Rupert Murdoch and many others are sitting on the top of the pyramid, controlling the strings of the world and they own almost everything available above the earth's surface, through their agents called politicians, through their banks and through the fake entities known as corporations. They are using the World Bank, the IMF, BIS, Central Banks, their Oil and pharmaceutical Corporations, their Media, their Military Industrial Complexes, the brand names like Nike, Reebok, Adidas, Mc Donald's, GM Foods, Nestle, and countless other names to dictate the masses, treating them like sheep and cattle.

The fact is that if Quranic ideology and the system defined in Quran has to be implemented somewhere, these Pharaohs will have to be defeated through economics. The system they have designed will have to be countered through an alternate system, and economics is the most important element in that system. In short, you cannot understand the complicated web they have constructed around you, without acquiring sufficient knowledge of their system, and you cannot defeat these Pharaohs without knowing their tactics.

I have said this before and I am saying it again:
The people must realize that they can live without money. They must understand that their needs in terms of food, shelter, education, healthcare etc. is not dependent on fiat money, rather this is their birth right as Human beings and they can produce enough on their own to fulfill these needs without depending on human authorities.

This is what Quran says;
إِنَّ لَكَ أَلَّا تَجُوعَ فِيهَا وَلَا تَعْرَىٰ وَأَنَّكَ لَا تَظْمَؤُ۟ا فِيهَا وَلَا تَضْحَىٰ

Aastana is like an institution for me, where I have learned how to think independently and in a clear state of mind. People like Dr. Qamar and Moazzam are like my teachers who helped me to take the first step towards a thought process and showed me what Quran is actually saying. The more I learned, the more I realized that the knowledge needs to be applied in the current era according to the present situation and in our practical lives in order to initiate a process which could bring around a change. I have got a clear indication from Quran that the system around us, requires a major change, and this change is not possible unless the ignorant masses starts thinking again. The system of Pharaoh is a deception and this deception needs to be defeated with knowledge and wisdom. Please don't forget that Moses was a part of Pharaoh's system earlier on and he learned each and every detail, while he lived within that system. Also please do keep in mind that Moses separated himself from the system and it was the first step he took, before initiating his struggle to bring around a change. He said NO to the system of Pharaoh first, and then he brought the change.

To tell you the truth, our case is slightly different here, because although we are spending our time and energies to learn the truth, we are reluctant to understand and challenge the system of Pharaohs. We are still living in a state of self denial that everything is just normal in the world around us and that there is nothing wrong with artificial economies, the artificial wealth, the fiat money, the fake education, the corporations, the Governments etc. Despite learning the true concepts of Saum, Hajj, Salaat, we are still thinking that the exploitation, the discrimination, the act of plundering of resources by corporations, the act of stealing wealth by the governments and political entities is all legal and there is no need to abolish this system.

I may be totally wrong here and you have got all the rights to say that, but if you do so, then you will have to provide me at least one example regarding what we have done so far to identify the actual flaws of the current system and what we have done so far to present a practically applicable alternate design to the society which could easily be understood by people of all mental levels.

Being the students of AL-Kitaab, It is our duty to identify the Pharaohs, the Hamaans, the Qaroons, of our time. It is our duty to initiate a thought process, which is only possible if we could come up with a practically applicable socio-economic design and present it to the people. Otherwise the forum as well as the message will keep on revolving among very few people on this forum, just like the wealth and resources are circulating among few elites in our world. Challenging the system, confronting elites, denying human authorities and defining an alternate system against their fake, corrupt system is our duty and we must realize it, otherwise knowledge of Quran is totally useless for us.

You and brother Moazzam are two very talented and knowledgeable individuals who posses a good understanding of Quranic message. If you two could try and guide people like me by providing more details regarding various concepts given in Quran, we can surely come up with something practical in near future. But for that you will have to concentrate and understand what I am telling you about the current system of the world. In fact if you think I am wrong, then you can always say it and in that case I would never blame you for not doing anything practically.

See? ... A very easy way out :)

You said in your post above that there are two types of people in the world, one who live for money and one who live for their abilities. That's true and I would agree to it, but then there is one more truth, one more reality and that is our system. The pyramid of authority which has been designed thousands of years ago is still functional in full force and those sitting on top are the true beneficiaries of all the activities going on at the bottom. Nothing in this world can happen and no one can do anything without approval of the elites sitting on the top. The knowledge is barred because the education systems cannot teach you anything without the permission of elites. They are sharing what they feel like and barring the info they think you should not have. The educational degrees, the certificates, the achievements, all guarantee you a place at the bottom of the pyramid but this knowledge is almost useless when you think of a life out of that pyramid. The internet which is known as a good medium to gain knowledge is filled with all the junk info and it's very difficult to distinguish between real and fake information. In such situation, you cannot live for the abilities because you cannot develop the real abilities

This system has been designed in such a way that it is automatically helping the elites to rule the masses and plunder the resources. The same resources which, according to Quranic instructions are required to be left open for all human beings, but unfortunately this access has been completely barred for majority today. The rights got taken away, the access got barred and people were made subservient to men rather that the creator only because the system we are following, has been designed this way. If we need justice and equality, if we are looking for equal distribution of resources, then we definitely need an alternate system and to design that system, knowledge of economics is very important.

Now let me show you another aspect of this system or another stone of the pyramid, and that is called "Religion". This crap known as "Religion" is also one of those negative agendas which was invented thousands of years ago by the Babylonians, the Greeks, the Persians, the Romans etc. Probably that is the reason why we have so many religions today and a careful analysis will give you the idea that the roots of all these religions are the same. Look at the practices of various religions, the rituals, the myths and you will notice that the stories are almost identical with only slight changes in characters and names.

Have you ever thought about why these religions were invented and what was the main objective behind this invention?

Well, I can see only one reason behind this master plan and that plan was to attain power and subjugate others.

Why do people want to become powerful? What is the main objective behind this agenda?

The answer is simple and that is, because of greed and selfishness or I would say an internal desire to become totally independent in terms of needs, while forcing others to become dependent. I am not sure when this desire was invoked in a human mind and why though.

Finally I would like to draw your attention towards the three basic needs of Human beings:

First one is food, because humans and in fact all the living organisms cannot live without food. Second is shelter, which is quite important when we talk about human beings in particular. Third one is social interaction which of course if a very important aspect of human life. According to my understanding, all these three basic needs require a proper plan in order to be handled on consistent basis and this planning is called economics.
(please correct me if I am wrong)

Dear Brother Junaid,

You have mentioned many important things in your last post and I will just summarise them and will comment on them.

1. Motivation of economic system from Quran, with an objective of peace
2. The present economic system of the world is run by some Elites, Pharaohs of the present Era, controlling the world through economics.
3. Today’s Moses will need to take a stand, emerging among those Elites.
4. Practical economic system needs to be comprehended from Quran, if exists.
5. The economic system functional at the moment is like tree, whose roots are well established beneath the earth, and needs exceptional efforts to root them out.
6. Presenting the true face of religion which made masses ignorant of economic constraints around them.

Brother Junaid, as per my understanding the first step is to comprehend the true Quran message, based on grammar and logic. It is however, unfortunate that masses (including all of us) are ignorant of the current economic cloud (ghamaam) around us. As a matter of fact, many of us can feel them but have no control over it.

Let me tell you in a practical way. Most of us spent our lives, struggling for survival. It reminds me of my friend saying when I first landed in Australia” تنخواہ سے صرف چولہہ ہی جلتا ہے

In what practical way we can start, at the same time, understanding the mentality of those Elites and their functional system. I am pretty sure, that the most opportunistic time for them is when people are in need of something desperately, and they make the most of it. Or may be they make such circumstances. It’s like spreading the computer virus and than launching antivirus.

I want to share an event happened in Sydney couple of months back. JJ visited Sydney, and we got text from 10 different sources saying JJ is coming to Sydney for Bayan. Anyway, after that Bayan date, I happened to meet my friend. All he asked me that why didn’t I turn up in that bayan. I couldn’t reply except that it was within weekdays.

Why the hell I would be interested in his bayaan, saying nothing but his personal life experiences. But you know what, it did attract everyone from sydney (except myself) and I must admit these people have the tandency of attracting masses. I discussed it with my friend at workplace and he told me it is a type of psychology called “Mob psychology or Crowd Psychology”. We must understand the masses psychology, as to why they are ignorant of everything around them.
