Dear All, my father gave reference of Al hadid surah 57 verse 22 in a healthy discussion for making me understand that every action/ destiny is pre written.

Dear All, Looking for a scholarly explanation for a scholarly person who is too stern to take rational explanation(smiley).

Yousuf Ali translation :
57:22 No misfortune can happen on earth or in your souls but is recorded in a decree before We bring it into existence: That is truly easy for Allah.

Tried to extract scholarly explanation from Allama Pervez translation but with my meager knowledge was unable to do the same.

Allama Pervez translation for 57 :22

57 : 22 (According to the law that has been described, only those who strive for them can obtain material comforts. The capacity and capability to earn varies from person to person and even external factors sometimes play a great role in this. Thus strictly applying the above criterion would not be fair. All these factors are also within Our Sight therefore) Before the occurrence of any external or internal episodes, We have provided for their compensation; and to make such a provision in our Law of Rabubiyyat was not difficult for Us.

Thanks,
Mubashir Syed.

Salaam;

Brother Mubashir, this is a very interesting topic. Please allow me to share my point of view in this regard;

2:281 And be mindful of the Day when you will be returned to Allah and every ‘self’ will be paid what it has earned, and they will not be wronged.

4:97 As for those who wrong their own ‘self’ by not striving until the angels (the laws of death) approach them, they are asked, “What kept you occupied?” They say, “We were weak and oppressed in the land.” The angels say, “Was not the earth of God spacious enough for you to migrate?”

(5:48) If Allah had willed, He could have made you all one single community. But He decided to let you test yourselves by what (potentials) He has granted you. So, outdo one another in doing good to the society. To Allah you will all return, and He will then make you understand wherein you differed.

10:44 Allah is never unjust to human beings; but people wrong themselves.

(13:11) Allah does not change the condition of a nation until they first change themselves.

17:19 And the one who keeps the life to come in view and strives for it as best as he can, provided he is a true believer; the endeavor of every such person will be accepted.

As per my understanding, there is no pre-destiny and that every human, every community, every nation and in fact all mankind has been granted free will to use it's potentials.

You will get what you'll strive for!

Dear junaid, thanx for refering other verses from Quran which clearly shows the power/will given to Humans to choose as they will. For sure am gonna use them with references in my next discussion with my father. As these might serve as beautiful contradictions of their understanding of 57:22.

Dear Momin, i think i got what you are trying to convey here. Not sure that might help in discussion may be word to word translation with real meaning will serve the purpose.

For Genotypes and Phenotypes plz follow below link were it was discussed sometime back. Would love to hear your comments under that thread.

Salaam;

Respected Brother Momin, please allow me to share Allama G.A. Perwez's point of view, from his book
"Islam A challenge to Religion;

http://www.tolueislam.com/Parwez/ICR/ICR_4.htm

Please read the full chapter and I am sure you'll get your answer.

Man and Wahi

No doubt, man too needs Divine Guidance. Without it, he is likely to go astray. However, the guidance which is vouchsafed to him is of a different kind which is suited to his peculiar characteristic. His activities are not governed by invariable laws, as is the case with inanimate beings, nor are they completely determined by the blind urges inherent in him. He has been granted a measure of freedom and this means that he is free to choose the right or wrong path, and that he is free even to commit mistakes. He may choose what is good for him; but he may also choose that which is harmful to him. He enjoys freedom of choice and has to pay the price for the wrong one. Even the sure guidance that instinct gives is denied to him. The chick, when it finds itself on the brink of a pond, instinctively shrinks back and saves itself. The human child may misuse its freedom because of internal compulsion and may plunge into the pond and get drowned. Man has much in common with the animals but the differences between the two are more important than the resemblance. His intellectual powers and immense learning capacity set him apart from the other animals. However, though potentially superior to the animals, he is at the beginning of life much worse-equipped for the struggle of life than they are. If he develops his powers he can quickly outstrip the animals; but if he fails to develop them, he may as easily sink below the animal level.

Dear brothers this verse is quoted often to prove that that everything that happens on earth is pre destined and written in special book. This topic is another big one. Based on the traditional translation it can easily be infer that Allah wrote everything even before things came into existence and outcome of those. So it is according to Allah’s own personal plan and we are just puppets. I was once hammered by my Shiite friends on this topic. Logic that was presented to me was that everything is pre destined that is beyond our capability and what is in our capability is also recorded once we commit.
The master of this topic for Christian is John Calvin. It is philosophical topic to discuss whether God is omniscient or eternal or a-temporal (free from limitations of time or even causality). Judaism is also well ingrain into this topic. Fact remains that this topic for Arabs of Prophet time is totally alien as Arabs of that time had not developed intellectual capabilities. These kinds of topics were domain of Romains, Greeks and Persians as they were consider masters of philosophy. Considering this fact Allah should not be introducing a topic that is extremely hard for a common man to understand and not easy for learned man either.
Second if it is predestined why Allah needs to tell us anyways what can we really do about it and what is the use for us? “Nothing”. It is beyond understanding and beyond usefulness of human beings. This topic will not provide relief to an oppressed or food to hungry this is the bottom-line.
The possible translation try considering the root words “Neither calamity of earth or calamity caused by yourselves but those are revealed and brought forth to you as it is easy for Allah”.
My more expert dear brothers moazzam and aurangzaib can correct me. I think Allah in this verse is not telling us something secret he has written down somewhere but calamity that are caused by human beings and of natural disasters that Allah exposed to us through his natural order that we observe and through Al-Kitab.

Dear AlAhmer, thanx for you good comments and possible trnaslation for the verse. On rationality grounds yes the tradtional logic itself is vague.

If someone has written a play in which my role is given as a Dacoit, at the end of play writer cant punish me for being a Dacoit( bad act for society). He can punish if and only if i dont perform perfect act of being a Dacoit.

Note : Wating for confirmation and translation with break down. As tradional translation was given to me with break down.

Thanks,
Mubashir Syed.
