Q.what is the meining of baqara or al baqara
By: laiq ahmed On: 2/15/2010

1.Dear Brother LAIQ Ahmed,

Apparently, yours is a very simple question. One of our participants must have answered it promptly. But I see no one has. 'Baqara' is simply the 'COW'. Al-Baqara would mean some particular COW that has been talked about in the relevant Chapter.
Research has proved that names/titles of Quranic Chapters (Suras) were not descended alongwith the Chapters. These names that we notice, were given to the Chapters much later, probably for ease of reference or to distinguish one from the other.

God bless you.

2.Dear Laiq Bhai,
Baqra (بقرۃ)is derived from the root letters (ب ق ر). The basic meaning is to tear, to divide, to open, to become blind.
A noun is derived from these basic meanings for cow. In general a holy thing is called "COW" You must have seen people saying that you have made your ideas a holy cow for you.
In sura 2 /67-71, cow is anything outside Gods Commands. When Moses asked to leave the cow, the people said "are you joking ?" the answer is amazing, Moses did not Yes or No. He said “if I am joking then I am an Illiterate person.”

The answer clearly shows the depth of demand. Leaving the cow is literacy and if saying jokingly is illiteracy. They further wanted the details of this cow,

Now if it was a cow (an animal) there is no sense in asking the details of an animal. It is just like us asking to leave everything outside Quran.

So many of us will say what are the things we should leave as so many things tally with Quran. It is like asking to leave Namaz and people will certainly say are you serious and what is bad in it if we continue and so on so forth. when they asked for further details Moses said “It does not make anything compulsory (farz) or its a dawn, a new morning (Bikr).
Only a thing made compulsory by God is Farz. Anything outside Wahi is not Farz (compulsory) but Nafil (optional) or Sunnat (copy of someone), so this cow i.e teachings outside Wahi can not make any order binding and compulsory nor it is a new dawn which brings light in the life.

The people of Moses were not willing to leave their faiths and rituals so they asked for more details. So Moses said “Its Yelow but bright and appealing to the masses”.
Yellow color is known to mask the real color .Yellow journalism, yellow books are known to be fake.

You apply the meaning and you will find the answer, The answer of Moses is clearly indicating towards the man made religion which is fake but very popular amongst the masses.

The people never accept whatever you say. Same was the case with the people of Moses they again and again asked so that they could avoid the Divine commands So they halfheartedly accepted that yes this cow has become doubtful to us and asked for further details and promised to accept the divine commands.
Moses answered,
“This is such an ideology which is not humble to people rather it infuriates nor it satisfies anybody. Although it is authentic in the eyes of the followers but there is nothing in it at last they accepted although they were not willing to do so.”

3.My dear Doctor Sahib,

My compliments for again shaking me violently from my bones. The interpretation of word "BAQARAH" is revolutionary and transforms the whole concept of respective Ayaat fundamentally. It goes directly in favor of the deep basic message of Quran and becomes so relevant that to deny it , could be easily construed un-Quranic. The Rivayati translation suddenly looks bogus and childish and certainly not in keeping with the high level of the Quranic divine intellect.

I take it as yet another breakthrough in the discovery of genuine interpretation of Quranic terminology. And as yet another crucial milestone in the journey of time.

And with reference to the above, I and my friends here feel still in the darkness of ignorance about much of the Quranic essence and spirit. That's why we continue insisting that your TAFSEER is long overdue, must be published NOW - be it in bits and pieces, or Surah by Surah. Kindly Sir, do give this demand a sympathetic consideration.

May He bestow you with a long, healthy and rewarding life.

5.Dear brothers,

Some friends are asking for Urdu translation of 2/67-71. Since Dr. Sahib seems quite busy, I dare to venture upon this project, seeking guidance from the Almighty. The source is absolutely the English explanation of Dr. Sahib on the pages of this blog. There is an omission in translation of a part of an Ayat. I have marked it with “?”, and I request Dr. Sahib to make good this omission and also make correction to this text, wherever he may find necessary.

AL-BAQARAH 2/67-71

If there are some mistakes in the translation, I apologize in advance.

God bless all.

i always have difficulty reading the urdu or arabic insertions.. they are very small and hence unclear.. i hope we can get a better font which is much better to read..

God bless, there is a great piece of work coming your way soon, so be ready .. am almost finished with the Salaat book alhamdulillah .

I agree with you about the size and style of Arabic and Urdu insertions. They are not easy to read. I noted that you can at least increase their size by scrolling on your mouse while keeping Ctrl key pressed. 'Printer Friendly View' also helps a little bit.

I thank you for announcing the good news. There are many many people awaiting the English version of Haqiqat-e-Salaat. May He reward you for your hard work with bountiful blessings and prosperity.

8.Dr. Qamar Zaman and Auranzeb Yousfzai Sahab: Aslamoalikum, after going through the meaning of Al-Baqrah I was astonished that what a great style quran has adopted!!!!!!!!!! and what our people have made it . but one thing is that you should write a Tafseer-e-quran and Lughatul Quran so that each and every thing in Quran can be very clear to us. because there are 100s of things in the quran which require answers and only a tafseer and lexicon can fulfil this demand. thnxs

9.I'd like to add a few comments on how I try to analyse words in the Quran, based upon what the Quran itself says.I'm sure these views are shared but if anyone can add to them then please add to them. I am no expert and only have the ability to look up words in a dictionary.
1. First, eliminate any preconceived ideas you hold from hadeeth, upbringing, etc. Try not to assume anything.
2. The Quran is consistent. You should not have a word which means one thing in one context, then means something else somewhere else. For consistency purposes it should mean the same thing in other contexts.
3. Quran is clear and detailed - not ambiguous.
4. Parts of Quran explain other parts
5. The Quran says it was revealed to a people with no previous history of messengers or wahi, so words like Gabriel, Heaven, Hell, etc. should not be in the Arab vocabulary - these are all borrowed from Biblical sources.
6. My thinking is that if Quran is clear and detailed then there should not be any proper nouns in it - including the names of prophets. The Arabic word ISM means a distinguishing mark, description etc.

14.Brother MN Khalid,

Your question is very pertinent.

However, the text you quoted actually is giving a very precise DEFINITION of the RIBA which is prohibited - the one WHICH IS EQUIVALENT TO "USURY".

It clarifies that the Prohibited one is actually CALLED 'AL-RIBA' and its peculiarity is that it is 'IZ'AAFAN MUZAA'IFATAN'. That is, that it is the one that is always DOUBLED AND MULTIPLIED and symbolizes ZULM.

When it says just RIBA (not "Al-Riba"), it only means some increase in your trading money, which is not prohibited. We all know that no trading can continue if there is no RIBA, viz., no enhancement in capital money.

So there are parameters. RIBA is the fair increase (profit, labour, etc.). And AL-RIBA is the unfair increase, which is exemplified by IZ'AAFAN MUZA'IFFATAN. This is the form of INTEREST called USURY, Loan Sharking, Black mail, etc.

15.Dear team of aastana website, AA. It is pleasing to see you people trying your best to discover the actual purpose and meanings of the quran as opposed to our religious brethren who are busy doing things in the name of Islam for which they have no clue. May Allah bless all of us mankind with proper understanding of his divine message properly.

Thank you dear friends for the explanation of word BAQARAH. My view is that this surah actually deals with issue of divisions in mankind eg reasons for divide, mindsets and attitudes, factions involved and their disputes and solutions and overall terms for peaceful living for mankind and some stories of the past people as to what happened in their time as regard divisions and solutions etc.

To me Surah al faatiha means the divine proclamation eg like a king sends his criers to deliver his messages to people under his jurisdiction.

Proclaim, in the name of Allah, the kind, the merciful.

sovereignty belongs to Allah the sole ruler of all the kingdoms, the one kind and merciful.

The one with right to provide rule of law as standard whereby all actions should be judged.

The next part is for people to accept this and confirm by their declaration or actions that they will not live by any other rule of law and that they will seek help from this law alone for all their needs.

So they seek to be inspired to the path that is firmly founded ie path of peace, progress and prosperity.

The path of those who followed similar laws before and attained prosperity because they did not incur indignation nor went astray.

This surah makes it very clear that the rest of the quran must be interpreted in this context.

However when we get to surah al baqarah. we are told that no doubt this book is a clear guidance but only for those who have bothered learning in life and got to a stage where they realise that they must become consistent with God and humanity and seek guidance to work to this end.

They are the ones who commit to working for peace in the land between humanity in the name of the unseen=Allah by trying their best to establish divine system whereby they try to ensure that land and its resources, means of production and distribution are open for the benefit of all.

This is just to explain my way of looking at the quran. I too have been busy trying to translate and interpret the quran and so far have done 9 parts.

I do not know whether I can put my stuff on this website or not and if yes how? It would be better if we could have a discussion forum because that will help more people to come and join us. I participate on various forums but they are not for religious discussion and religious forums are strict so it is not possible for people like us participate their.

Also ideas breed ideas so it would be better if we could share our ideas freely about the quran in order to come up with better up to date translations and interpretations of the quran.

The interpretation of this surah and all others rests on proper understanding of surah al faatiha. The quran is basically book of heavenly set goals and guidelines for people to achieve.

Like surah albaqarah, I also think that surah nisaa is about communities not women and surah almaaidah is about divine constitution and not about table of food. Surah six is not about cattles but blessings ie progress and prosperity. surah 7 is about heights of wisdom. Surah anfaal is not about spoils of war but about creating surplus and its distribution and saving for future. The whole quran in my view has been miinterpreted and the way it is misinterpreted is deliberate.

Thanks for putting effort into something very worthwhile. God bless and all the best.

My work is on going and it is going to take time to complete but I am hopeful to complete it in not too distant future. It is just very difficult to find time at times that holds back the flow. You will agree that this kind of work really needs a lot of time for study due to nature and amount of information involved in it for handling. All I can hope for is that Allah bless us all with proper understanding of his message.

22.Dear Mughal & Mubashir Assalam-o-alaikum.
Thanks very much both of you. I found enough material on the links provided. One of my friend / Ustad Dr. Shahab Alam says that translation / interpretation of Bismillah hir ...... nir rahim, cannot be IN THE NAME OF ALLAH, as there is difference of ALIF in BISMILLAH and IQRA BAY ISMAY ( Sura ALAQ 96 / 1 ). According to him BAA, SEEN, MEEM (without alif ) of Bismillah is root of Arabic / urdu word " TABASSUM ". So far Dr. Shahab translates as ' Itminan kay baais Allah say muskurao jo intahaai meharbaan aur reham wala hai." Could you look Bismillah in this perspective also and provide better / rephrased urdu / english translation. Regards SGA.

I have gone through the details regarding bismillah available with surah fatiha. Still the matter looks me unsettled.
The meaning of bismillah without ALIF and with ALIF cannot be same. (if we are sure it is not printing mistake).
I therefore requested for further study in another perspective. Like studies / efforts for understanding " harf muqattiaat "
are to be continued. Regards SGA.

25.10 nights? LAYIL
by Heer Saleti

لیل is being used for days of misery in every literature.

In Sura 89 you will find comparison of two eras one of لیل and the other of فجر .

After fourth verse عاد ، ثمود ، فرعون is described . Why …………? Because their era is described as era of وَلَيَالٍ عَشْرٍ . The days of misery and sufferings for the people but for عاد ثمود and فرعون the same era was of عشرت.

It is important to note لَيَالٍ عَشْرٍ is wrongly translated as ten nights.

This is مرکّب توصیفی which means “عشر “ is used as adjective, describing لیال

It was meant ten nights it would have been عشرۃ لیال

TALOOT AND JALOOT
Read the following terminologies before proceeding ahead.
طَالُوتُ = Root is TALATA, meaning is most descent and popular among the people.
جَالُوتَ = root is JALATA( meaning is to fight to harm) a character who is extremely harmful to people[barbaric fighter].

دَاوُدُ = Root is DAWADA meaning is very smart and fast to chase, swift to take action.
نَبِيٍّ = The rasool who has the authority to appoint the Commanders and/or head of the departments.
التَّابُوتُ =Highly expert in fighting tactics
تَحْمِلُهُ الْمَلآئِكَةُ = The official of the state would be responsible to implement.
بَقِيَّةٌ مِّمَّا تَرَكَ آلُ مُوسَى وَآلُ هَارُونَ THE TEACHINGS OF prophet Mosa's followers
سَكِينَةٌ = Satisfaction
مُبْتَلِيكُم بِنَهَرٍ= You would be tested (experienced) with some restrictions.
فَمَن شَرِبَ مِنْهُ= A man who did involve in that (violated) , to infer the sense of “sharaba”see the verse 2/93)
يَطْعَمْهُ = who did attachment with that[prohibits]
مَن لَّمْ يَطْعَمْهُ = the man who haven’t any sort of attachment (patch) with it.
مَنِ اغْتَرَفَ غُرْفَةً بِيَدِهِ = A man who completely isolated himself to support the violators

LET US ELABORATE THE STORY.
Go through the verses 2/246-251,
In verse 246, Bani Israil asked to their Nabi to appoint their commander to fight with “jaloot regime” under his command .
In verse 247, some people objected on the appointment-criteria of their commander, but Nabi rejected their objection and satisfied them with his set auspices [ the superiority in knowledge and power]
In verse 248, the NABI OF TIME pointed out the following signs [for the befitted appointment on merit as a Malik(commander)
(1) Taloot has good command over war tactics (one of the requirement to remove anxiety)
(2) The Malaika (official ) with him are more responsible to implement the “ taurat teachings”( بَقِيَّةٌ مِّمَّا تَرَكَ آلُ مُوسَى وَآلُ هَارُونَ).
In verse 249, The commander tolled his people that You would be tested with following “IMPOSED RESTRICTIONS .
(1) If any body, who will be involved (violated) core heatedly in it, he will be rejected at once.
(2) Any body who don’t have any sort of attachment with the said restrictions he will be considered among us.
(3) Any body if been involved in the prohibited matters, but after realization he completely isolated himself to help the violators, he would also be considered among us.
But majority of people failed in the mandatory test, except the small group of true Momineen, infect the determent people.
Verse 250-251, The minor group of Momineen bravely fought with JALOOT REGIME, The man who was much smart and swift [DAWOOD] killed the Jaloot

28.
Aastana's method is to these method:- 1. Every word of Quran should be translated according to the rules of Grammar and the dictionary.
2. Find out the subject of the Sura
3. What are contents of the Sura
4. Find out the different topics discussed
5. Correlate the different topics and subtopics if any
6. Find out different claims and the challenges
7. The arguments and reasons to substantiate the challenge or claim
8. Don’t beat about the bush. Limit yourself to the message of Quran the Subject and topics of the Sura.
9. To understand a particular Ayyat (verse) study the context to know the background I always said the Quran must be translated according the grammar rules and Rattal etc.
see the message in
1)The context of the verse.
2) The core message of the Quran( ie to protect the human right and to purify the sef)
3) The RATTAL al Quran.
RATTIL ALQURANA TARTEELA = TO READ/ PUT/ARRANGE THE VERSES/QASES OF QURAN IN AN OPPROPRIATE MANNERS .SO AS, THE SOLUTIONS TO THE MATTERS UNDER QUESTION MAY BECOME CLEAR TO THE LISTENERS. *****
One is not preferred over the other, here is an example how the meaning of thalatha is decided , having in mind the context, topic of surah, method or rattal etc
ثَلَاثَةً= also means three, but at some places the context determine its real sense with respect to its antonym at same place. Like in case of Moses storyوَاعَدْنَا مُوسَى ثَلاَثِينَ لَيْلَةً وَأَتْمَمْنَاهَا بِعَشْرٍ فَتَمَّ مِيقَاتُ رَبِّهِ أَرْبَعِينَ لَيْلَةً .
Here arbaeena laila (prosperous time, period of extreme happiness) is antonym of thaltheena laila [this is probably not to be found in Lane's dictionary, but we found something in one dictionary. Same goes with the story of S Zakarya, he have to wait for THREE nights/days .. then the question occur, why exact three nights? does it make any sense? No it doesn't so we will do the research in order to find the meaning that give sense and fit in the context and it is under the parameters of the Quran.
